Eastern Congo cities at risk of Mpox outbreak

Congo: Goma, east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, is facing a major Mpox outbreak, according to the African Center for Infectious Disease Control and Prevention (ACCDC) reported over the weekend. Many have been found in recent days.

The agency went on to warn that the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in Africa had been alarmingly high since the first outbreak in early 2024, with a total of five cases so far. 549 people, including 643 people lost their lives.

Congo is considered to be the epicenter of more than 20,000 suspected cases of chickenpox, with 635 deaths, or 90% of the total. Total victims worldwide.

The outbreak in Goma, which has a population of more than 700,000, is putting the Congolese health system at a disadvantage in response to the situation, including the need to implement data collection measures for analytical studies. And plans to restrict citizen travel activities to prevent the spread from one area to another.
